Content Marketing 101:
Who Is Your Ideal Consumer?

Published: January 19 2016

You can’t really create any kind of successful marketing plan, content or otherwise, without knowing and understanding your target market. If your marketing isn’t tailored to a particular audience, no one will listen. It’s the marketing equivalent of walking into a bar and talking to the entire room; No one knows if you are talking to them or not, and you mostly look a bit batty.

Ask yourself some tough questions and work to identify your ideal consumer.

  • Are they male or female? How old are they?
  • What is their income and education level?
  • Where do they live?
  • What is their family and social life like?
  • What are your ideal consumer’s hobbies and other interests?
  • Why would they purchase from you?

Once you have these questions answered, you need to ask yourself one very tough question; Does your product or service even appeal to the person you have just described? If not, you need to rethink your target audience!

Now that you have established the profile of your ideal consumer, you will create all of your content marketing pieces with this person in mind. Consider whether this person would be interested in your post or blog and whether or not it would inspire or motivate them to interact with it. If they wouldn’t interact with your content, you are wasting your time!

Pro-Tip: Visualizing your ideal consumer isn’t always easy. Try to match up someone you know to the profile you have created in your mind. Putting a literal face and name to your ideal consumer makes it much easier to analyze what content will be effective.
